Court rejects Trump's request: US may have to pay €110 billion in tariff refunds

According to a Euronews report published on March 3, 2026; a significant court decision has been made regarding tariffs in the US. The report states that a US federal appeals court rejected President Donald Trump's administration's request to postpone tariff refunds. Following this decision targeting Donald Trump's trade measures, a federal appeals court's move to expedite the refund process means the US could face a refund process of up to approximately €110 billion due to some tariffs applied in the past.

According to the news, the US Supreme Court previously ruled that the comprehensive tariffs imposed by the Trump administration under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) lacked legal basis and were set to go into effect in 2025. Following this decision, a federal appeals court also rejected an application to postpone the restitution process and subsequently referred the case back to the US International Trade Court.

The report also states that following the decision, nearly two thousand companies filed numerous lawsuits to reclaim the customs duties they had paid. Now, the International Trade Court is expected to establish a framework for how the process will proceed. Furthermore, the report emphasizes that any potential refunds will be made directly to the US importers who paid the taxes, not to the foreign companies themselves.
