THE UNITED STATES’ STRATEGIC DEADLOCK IN THE MIDDLE EAST: AN ANALYSIS OF QUICKSAND

Nisa ERŞAHİNOĞLU tarafından

In Quicksand, Geoffrey Wawro explains the long term involvement of the United States in the Middle East not mainly through military failure, but through a persistent misunderstanding of the region. According to Wawro, the U.S. believed that the Middle East could be shaped according to American values and expectations, while ignoring its historical, social and political realities. As a result, each intervention pushed the U.S. deeper into what Wawro describes as a strategic “quicksand.”

U.S. Middle East policy has long fluctuated between idealist rhetoric, such as democracy and freedom, and practical concerns like oil, security and strategic interests. The special relationship with Israel weakened America’s image as a neutral actor in the Arab world, while alliances with authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia contradicted American values. Wawro argues that these contradictions undermined U.S. legitimacy in the region.

During the Cold War, the United States viewed the Middle East primarily as a barrier against Soviet expansion and often ignored local political dynamics. Interventions such as the 1953 overthrow of Iran’s Prime Minister Mossadegh appeared successful in the short term but created long lasting anti-American sentiment and radicalization. The U.S. frequently misinterpreted Arab nationalism, which caused military actions to result in political failure.

After the September 11 attacks, these mistakes became even more visible. The invasion of Iraq was planned without serious consideration of the region’s sectarian and social structure, leading to instability rather than democracy. According to Wawro, this period represents the deepest point of the American “quicksand,” where historical lessons were largely ignored.

In conclusion, Quicksand argues that America’s problems in the Middle East stem not from temporary policy errors but from long term structural mistakes. Wawro emphasizes that the United States can only escape this situation by confronting its past failures and understanding the region through its realities rather than its own ideals.
