RUTTE HAILS NATO’S 5% DEFENSE TARGET AS TRUMP’S KEY FOREIGN POLICY SUCCESS

Sümeyye CERİT tarafından

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the commitment of NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP as Donald Trump's greatest foreign policy achievement. Rutte stated that Trump's influence over European allies has made NATO stronger than ever, and that this is positive for collective defense and for Ukraine. Responding to Rutte's warning that Russia could attack NATO members in the coming years, Vladimir Putin called these claims "baseless," stating that Russia would achieve its goals militarily if necessary. The report also addresses the peace plan proposed by the U.S. in the context of the Ukraine war, Europe's efforts to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and the West's inadequate defense capabilities in the face of Russia's increasing military production capacity. The report states that NATO needs to rapidly increase defense spending to strengthen its resolve against the Russian threat.

NATO's decision to increase security investments and developments in the context of the war in Ukraine present significant risks and challenges for the alliance. Firstly, the commitment by NATO countries to spend 5% of their GDP on defense by 2035 constitutes a significant economic burden, particularly for European countries, putting pressure on public budgets, social spending and domestic political relations. Furthermore, the inability of Western European defense industries to reach a capacity that can rival Russia's rapid arms production in the short term poses a major challenge to the sustainability of military resolve.

On the other hand, assurances given to Ukraine and a potential European led military presence could be perceived as a direct threat by Russia, risking a broader disagreement between NATO and Russia. Plans that could lead to Ukraine relinquishing certain territories, which have been raised in peace negotiations, create a political legitimacy problem for both the Kyiv government and European public opinion, and could lead to divisions among allies. All these factors indicate that NATO faces serious and multifaceted risks, both in terms of maintaining internal cohesion and increasing its deterrence against Russia.

In conclusion, NATO's decision to increase defense investments and its diplomatic and military initiatives regarding the war in Ukraine aim to strengthen the unity of forces against the long term threat posed by Russia. However, economic burdens, political divisions, and the risk of tension suggest that we are entering a critical period that will determine the future of European and transatlantic security structures.
