"Putin's Demands Put Peace Hopes at Risk"

Russia's recent statements regarding the war in Ukraine, particularly those made by Vladimir Putin ahead of his meetings with the US in Moscow, have reignited political tensions in the region. Putin emphasized that ending the war requires the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas and the recognition of the regions Russia aims to annex. His statement that he would "take them by force" if these demands are rejected poses a serious obstacle to peace efforts at their very outset.

In the overall assessment of the process, it is seen that diplomatic talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine have intensified in recent days. Although the meeting of US and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva to discuss a new peace proposal indicates an intensification of diplomatic activity, there are comments that this proposal is being evaluated in Russia's favor. Nevertheless, critical issues such as the occupied territories and guarantees remain unresolved. Therefore, the US delegation's visit to Moscow takes on great importance. However, Ukrainian leader Zelensky categorically rejects the surrender of the occupied territories, stating that Russia is taking peace efforts lightly. European countries are also becoming increasingly skeptical of Putin's sincerity regarding peace.

Considering the risks posed by all these developments, the opposing stances of the parties could lead to peace talks reaching an impasse before they even begin. In particular, Putin's rhetoric declaring the Ukrainian government "illegitimate" weakens the legal and political basis for the negotiation process and makes reaching a solution even more difficult. In addition, the potential for increased diplomatic tension between Russia and the US is heightening security concerns in Europe and increasing the likelihood of prolonged conflict. The status of Crimea and Donbas remains the most critical point of contention.

In light of all these assessments, despite the acceleration of diplomatic efforts, it is evident that the fundamental differences between the parties render the prospect of peace uncertain in the near future.
