Syria has arrested five people suspected of being linked to an armed attack against the US and Syrian troops that killed three Americans.
Two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed by an attacker who targeted a convoy of American and Syrian forces before they were shot dead. The Syrian Ministry of Interior described the attacker as a memberof the Syrian security forces suspected of sympathising with the Islamic State.
The Syrian Ministry of the Interior confirmed the arrests on Sunday, a day after the attack in the central town of Palmyra, as US President Donald Trump promised to cause significant damage to those responsible.
"I can tell you that the people who do this in Syria will be greatly harmed," Trump said. "They caught the person ... but it will be a big damage."
The day before, Trump promised to "serious retaliate" against ISIS (ISIS) after killing two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the ambush in central Syria.
Syria is cooperating with a US-led coalition against the Islamic State by reaching an agreement last month in which President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited the White House.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said its units in Palmyra carried out an operation coordinated with "international coalition forces" and resulted in the arrest of five suspects who were "immediately referred for questioning".
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the attack by phone with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani on Sunday. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said Shibani "exciterated his condolences and reiteratedthe Syrian government's commitment to insult and destroy the common ISIS threat."
An investigation is underway to determine whether the attacker is linked to ISIS, but Trump on Saturday charged the armed group that seized territories in Syria and Iraq in 2014.
The attack on US forces was the first loss of life since the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a year ago.
According to government and media reports, at least two Syrian soldiers were injured in the attack, as well as three U.S. soldiers, Trump said in a social media post that he received confirmation that wounded U.S. soldiers werein "good condition." However, he warned that what he described as an ISIS attack would have serious consequences. Trump wrote, "This was an ISIS attack on the US and Syria in a very dangerous area of Syria, not completely controlled by them." “Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is extremely angry and uncomfortable with this attack. It will be a very serious retaliation."
In recent months, the US-led coalition has carried out airstrikes and ground operations targeting Islamic State suspects in Syria, often with the participation of Syria's security forces. Syria also launched a nationwide campaignlast month, arresting more than 70 people accused of linking the group.
The United States has troops stationed in northeastern Syria as part of a decade of effort to fight the Islamic State, which held Syria and Iraq between 2014 and 2019.
The Syrian government is now led by former rebels, including members of Syria's former Al-Qaeda branch, which broke away from the group and clashed with the Islamic State, who overthrew leader Bashar al-Assad last yearafter a 13-year civil war.
