WAR AND DIPLOMACY COLLIDE: RUSSIA’S STRIKES ON KYIV AND THE FRAGILE PATH TO PEACE

Sümeyye CERİT tarafından

Russia launched a massive offensive on the capital Kyiv, plunging the city into complete darkness and targeting its infrastructure, just before critical peace negotiations could begin.

While the Russia-Ukraine war rages on, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have resurfaced. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's preparations to contact U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss a possible peace package to end the war are being closely watched by the international community. However, these diplomatic steps are overshadowed by Russia's ongoing air strikes against Ukraine, particularly targeting energy and civilian infrastructure. This demonstrates that the war is not only a fierce power struggle on the battlefield but also at the negotiating table, and that a lasting solution largely depends on the attitudes of international players.

The risks and challenges arising in this process seriously threaten the success of peace initiatives. Above all, Russia's continued military offensives weaken the negotiating environment and prevent the establishment of diplomatic trust. Attacks targeting energy and civilian infrastructure, in particular, are deepening the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and putting pressure on the government's negotiating position. Furthermore, there is a deep divide between Ukraine's demands for territorial integrity and security guarantees and Russia's desire to protect its gains on the ground. The lack of complete consensus among international actors, primarily the potential differences in policies pursued by the U.S. and Europe, complicates the peace process. Moreover, domestic public pressure limits the leaders' capacity for compromise and makes it difficult for the process to achieve a sustainable peace in the long term. All these factors suggest that diplomatic efforts are proceeding with a high degree of uncertainty and fragility, and that a lasting solution faces significant obstacles, both politically and militarily.

Finally, while diplomatic initiatives to end the Russia-Ukraine war offer a promising foundation, the military realities on the ground, the deep distrust between the two sides, and the conflicting interests of international actors clearly indicate that establishing a lasting and just peace in the short term will be quite difficult.
