As is known, Ukraine is not a NATO member country, but it has close cooperation with NATO. Prior to the new talks on the US peace plan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy avoided insisting on Ukraine joining NATO.
Following talks in Berlin, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, responding to journalists' questions on the matter, stated that this request was not supported by all allied states. He indicated that he was considering obtaining similar security guarantees from the EU and the US as a compromise. In particular, Ukraine wishes to benefit from collective defense under Article 5 of NATO, as it offers a high degree of security.
Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine war continues at full speed. Washington has been trying to mediate between the parties for months and is struggling to stop the war. US President Donald Trump insists that Russia end the war as soon as possible, but this has been met with disappointment. President Trump recently increased pressure on Zelenskyy, saying, "Ultimately you have to move forward and make concessions while losing because Ukraine is losing."
In response to these situations, Russia stands by its demands. Russian President Vladimir Putin demands that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the part of the Donetsk region that is still under its control and abandon its efforts to join NATO. Specifically, Ukraine abandoning its NATO aspirations is one of Russia's fundamental conditions for peace.
In conclusion, ending the war would benefit both countries and all those affected by it in every way. Therefore, not only US mediation but also the assistance of other countries is needed. Countries must partner for peace, because this peace would be in the interest of many countries, especially those involved in the war.
