Turkey is buying foreign fighter jets until its own national jet “KAAN” is ready.
The country plans to purchase 12 used Eurofighter Typhoon jets from Qatar and Oman as an immediate step, and possibly new ones later.
At the same time, Turkey’s defence spending is expected to reach a record high, at about 47 billion USD in 2025.
The increase is driven by regional conflicts and a desire for local defence production.
Turkey is making big moves in its defence strategy. First, the Turkish government has announced that until its own fighter jet the national project called “KAAN” becomes available, it will buy ready aircraft from abroad. For example, Turkey is set to receive 12 used Eurofighter Typhoon jets from Qatar and Oman. Then later, it might buy new ones too. This plan shows that Turkey wants to keep its air force strong without waiting.
Second, defence spending in Turkey is rising to a new record. In 2025, the budget for defence and security is expected to reach about 47 billion USD, the highest ever. The increase is partly because the country faces threats in its neighbourhood, such as in Syria and other nearby regions. Also, Turkey is working hard to build its own defence industry, with locally-made missiles and radars. By doing this, the country wants to depend less on foreign suppliers.
The combination of buying jets now and boosting the budget shows Turkey’s urgency. Turkey wants to fill current gaps in defence capability while also planning for the future with its national jet and domestic production. This dual approach means short-term purchases and long-term investment go hand in hand.
