Microsoft, known for its reliability and accuracy in analytical data, has shared a new analysis. The analysis reveals that "increasing tensions among Russian actors have increased their cyberattacks against NATO countries." In this case, when we look at the numerical data, Russia's cyberattacks against NATO countries have increased by 25% in one year. Ukraine is one of the regions where the attacks took place. While Russia is one of Russia's ultimate targets, the remaining 10 countries (the US, UK, Germany, Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, Netherlands, France, Estonia, and Belgium) are NATO members. Twenty percent of Russia's cyberattacks target the US, 12 percent target the UK, and 6 percent target Germany. The remaining entities were targeted by these attacks by less than 5 percent.
This report, published by Microsoft, indicated that 25 percent of cyberattacks target government institutions, 13 percent target research groups, and 13 percent target think tanks and non-governmental organizations. Because these cyberattacks directly target government institutions and key social institutions, their destructiveness is high. Furthermore, Russians are finding new targets for their attacks. Microsoft also reports an increase in attacks targeting small businesses in countries supporting Ukraine by Russian actors. The report states that "Russian actors may view small businesses as easier gateways to larger organizations." These situations put government institutions and organizations at risk and put them in a difficult position.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. "This is not random harassment. It is a consistent and escalating campaign aimed at unsettling our citizens, testing our resolve, dividing our Union, and undermining our support for Ukraine," said.
Last year, Russia targeted a broader group of organizations, particularly for "cyber espionage." This put more organizations at risk. The report did not provide any information on how these risks were realized.
