NATO'S NEW MISSION IN THE ARCTIC

Sude Nur AKBULUT tarafından

Following escalating tensions in the Arctic region, NATO has launched a new mission to ensure security and create a deterrent force against potential threats. This mission, called "Arctic Guardian," will conduct exercises in the region under NATO control. Essentially, NATO aims to demonstrate its strong military presence in the region to Russia and China with this new mission. Simultaneously, NATO seeks to reduce tensions in the Arctic, particularly those centered around Greenland. NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Alexus Grynkewich stated, "Arctic Guardian underscores the Alliance's commitment to protecting its members and ensuring stability in one of the world's most strategically important and environmentally challenging regions."

The primary objective of the Arctic Guardian mission is to coordinate the growing NATO presence in the region. This mission will be managed by the Joint Forces Command (JFC) based in Norfolk, USA. This newly established mission will strengthen NATO's presence in the region and provide access not only to NATO activities but also to national activities carried out by NATO allied countries. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated, "We must maintain this momentum to ensure that the Arctic region is taken into account in NATO's long-term plans and exercises." This clearly indicates Denmark's contribution to the newly established mission. Not only Denmark, but also Germany and the UK have explicitly stated their commitment to the mission. The Cold Response exercise in Norway, involving over 30,000 troops, and the Arctic Resilience exercise series organized by Denmark will be included within the scope of Arctic Guardian.

Since the Cold War era, NATO has conducted numerous exercises in the Arctic region. The difference between the past and the present is that the number of Arctic exercises has increased to ensure NATO is ready to act under any circumstances.

The Arctic region is of great importance to NATO due to its richness in oil, natural gas, and rare earth elements, as well as its role as a gateway to the North Atlantic and its vital importance to trade routes. It is important not only for NATO, but also for many countries that have their eyes on the Arctic today. For example, Russia's increasing military activity and China's growing interest in the region make a NATO presence there inevitable. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, stating that there is a real threat in the region, said regarding the launch of the new mission, "It was very important that we do more in the face of Russia's increasing military activity and China's growing interest in the Arctic."

It is also being considered whether Russia, which has maintained a tendency to observe developments in Greenland silently and from a distance since the beginning of the process, may change its stance with this new mission. It is highly probable that Russia will increase its military presence in response to the increased military presence in the region.
