Loss of Biodiversity and Global Politics

Doruk MERAY tarafından

Biodiversity encompasses the entire life-support system of our planet, including all living species within ecosystems. Today, the international community faces a critical crisis due to the rapid extinction of species. I believe this is one of the most pressing global security issues of our time, as ecological stability and the survival of states are fundamentally interconnected.

There are complex international dynamics behind the loss of biodiversity:

-Unregulated Industrialization and Deforestation: Uncontrolled deforestation, driven by global trade and development agendas, destroys natural habitats within the sovereign territories of states.

-Transboundary Pollution: Industrial waste and plastic pollution recognize no borders, threatening international waters and the global commons.

-Climate Change and Geopolitics: Global warming undermines state control over vital resources and triggers new security crises, such as "ecological displacement" and the rise of climate refugees.

In my opinion, actors within the international system often prioritize short-term political and economic gains over this existential threat. Many states exploit natural resources for immediate economic growth while neglecting sustainable development goals. However, every element of the ecosystem plays a vital role in international stability. For instance, the depletion of water resources can lead to interstate conflicts, and the loss of agricultural biodiversity can jeopardize global food security, deepening humanitarian crises.

To protect biodiversity, global governance mechanisms must be effectively utilized. Beyond individual efforts like recycling, states must ratify and enforce more robust environmental treaties (such as the Convention on Biological Diversity - CBD) within platforms like the United Nations. Environmental diplomacy should be encouraged as a component of soft power, and clean energy projects should be placed at the heart of international cooperation. Collective action by small nations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can significantly influence the formation of new global norms.

To conclude, biodiversity loss is not merely an environmental concern but a major foreign policy challenge that threatens the collective future of humanity. I believe that states must unite around the reality of "one planet" and integrate environmental protection into their national interests. If collective action is not taken today, future generations may lose not only biological species but also the prospect of a stable and peaceful world order.
