Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that an agreement with Syria is possible and that they expect Syria to create a demilitarised buffer line in the region stretching from Damascus to Mount Hermon. Negotiations on a security agreement between Israel and Syria have been going on for months, but it seems to have made little progress in recent weeks. Syria does not officially recognise Israel, which expanded its illegal occupation of Syrian territory last year. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war and then illegally annexed the area, this move was recognised by the United States but rejected by most of the internationalcommunity.
Then, after the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, he returned from a 1974 agreement and further expanded into Syrian territory, including all of Jabal al-Sheikh, a mountain thatdominated the landscapes of northern Israel and southern Syria.
Israel has repeatedly attacked Syria last year, despite the new government's insistence that Damascus is not looking for war. Recently, an Israeli attack last Friday killed 13 people in the town of Beit Jinn in the southwest of Damascus.
"What we expect Syria to do, of course, is to create a demilitarized buffer zone from Damascus to the buffer zone, including approaches to Mount Hermon and the summit of Hermon," Netanyahu said while visiting woundedsoldiers in central Israel. "We hold these areas to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens, and this is what makes it mandatory for us."
"It is possible to reach an agreement with the Syrians in goodwill and an understanding of these principles, but in any case we will stand behind our principles," he added. While Trump supported Syria's new leader Ahmed al-Shara, Israel expressed its cautiousness about Shara's past ties with Islamist militancy, but entered into efforts to mediate an agreement. Trump praised what al-Sharaa, who promised to unite Syria after years of civil war andsectarian fragmentation, described as progress under his new government. The US president wrote, "The United States, with hard work and determination, is very pleased with the results shown in the Syrian country." "We aredoing everything we can to ensure that the Syrian Government continues to do what is intended to build a real and prosperous country."
“Syria's new President Ahmed al-Sharaa is working diligently to ensure that good things happen and that both Syria and Israel have a long and prosperous relationship together,” he added. Shortly after Trump's statement, Netanyahu's office said the two leaders spoke on the phone.
