Iran’s Geopolitical Position, Historical Identity, and the Diplomatic Tensions Surrounding Nuclear Ambitions

Bünyamin Memiş tarafından

Iran strongly condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to resume nuclear weapons testing. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the United States for adopting what he described as an irresponsible and destabilizing approach to global security. The minister argued that Washington’s willingness to reignite nuclear testing, while simultaneously accusing Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, reflects a deep inconsistency in U.S. foreign policy.

Beyond the immediate diplomatic reaction, this issue is tied to Iran’s broader geopolitical and historical context. Iran occupies a mathematically strategic location positioned at the intersection of the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. This geographical placement has historically given Iran a significant degree of regional influence. Combined with its long-standing state tradition and civilizational depth, Iran views itself as a natural regional power capable of shaping political dynamics around it.

Because of this deep historical identity and strategic position, Iran perceives nuclear capability or at least nuclear technological advancement as something aligned with its geopolitical reality. In my view, Iran believes that its ancient civilization, territorial size, and central geographic placement make it inherently suitable for nuclear ownership. This perception contributes to Tehran’s belief that it deserves a status comparable to other major powers with nuclear capabilities.

This belief, however, is not shared by its rivals. Many states, particularly the United States, view Iranian nuclear ambitions as a threat to regional and international security. As a result, Iran’s stance often leads to diplomatic disputes or international confrontations. The clash between Iran’s self-perception and the concerns of other global actors continues to generate friction in international politics.

Ultimately, the latest tensions described in the Al Jazeera report reflect a larger ongoing struggle between Iran’s desire for recognition and the international community’s efforts to restrict nuclear proliferation. This dynamic is likely to remain a significant aspect of Middle Eastern and global diplomacy in the foreseeable future.
