Turkey-Spain Defence Industry Cooperation: HÜRJET Training Jet Deal

Yiğit Buğra DİKİCİ tarafından

On December 30, 2025, Turkey and Spain signed an important defence contract worth 2.6 billion euros. This agreement allows Spain to buy 30 advanced training jets, called HÜRJET, from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). These jets are light training aircraft that will help train future pilots of the Spanish Air and Space Force.

The deal is significant because it marks the first time Turkey will sell HÜRJET aircraft to another country. The contract followed a cooperation agreement between TAI and the European company Airbus in July, which helped bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion.

Under the agreement, the deliveries of the HÜRJET jets are planned to start in 2028 and continue until 2036. Spain will use these aircraft for pilot training and possibly for light attack tasks in the future, replacing older training planes in its air force.

Officials on both sides say the contract will strengthen defence cooperation between Turkey and Spain, especially within NATO. They believe that this partnership may lead to more defence industry projects and joint work in the future.

For Turkey, this deal shows the growth of its defence and aerospace industry. In recent years, Turkey has worked to reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers and to increase its own production of modern military equipment. The export of HÜRJET jets to Spain is seen as a major achievement and may open new opportunities for Turkish products in global markets.
