In December 2025, several important events happened that involved Turkey, Syria, Libya, and Russia. These events show political, military, and energy developments in the region.
First of all on December 22, a high-level Turkish delegation visited Damascus, Syria, to discuss the integration of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the Syrian state. Turkey wants the SDF to join the Syrian army, but Turkish leaders said the SDF has shown little effort to integrate. Turkey also sees the SDF as a security threat because of its ties with other groups in the area. Syrian officials offered a plan for reorganisation, but there was no clear progress by the end of the talks.
Secondly on December 23, Turkish authorities reported that radio contact was lost with a private jet believed to be carrying the Libyan army chief of staff near Ankara. The aircraft later crashed in the countryside.
After that on December 24, officials confirmed that the plane crashed after reporting an electrical failure. All eight people on board were killed, including the Libyan military leader and his delegation. Turkey and Libya are now investigating the cause.
And finally on December 26, Turkey announced that Russia provided $9 billion in new financing for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. This plant, built by the Russian company Rosatom, is Turkey’s first nuclear power station. It was expected to start operations in 2025 but has been delayed to 2026. The new financing will help complete the project and support future energy plans.
These events reflect both regional diplomacy and strategic issues involving military cooperation and energy infrastructure in late 2025.
