Regional Security and the Azerbaijan–Iran Crisis Following the Drone Attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic

Atakan Mert ÖZTÜRK tarafından

On 5 March 2026, the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran took a sharp turn for the worse after drones allegedly deployed from Iranian territory attacked the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. While one of the drones hit the passenger terminal at Nakhchivan International Airport, another landed near the school building in the rural village of Shakarabad. As a result, four civilians were injured, and infrastructure was damaged. Azerbaijan condemned the attack, stating that the drone attack on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan was a violation of international law. Moreover, the attack posed a significant threat to regional security. Azerbaijan requested that Iran explain the circumstances of the attack. In addition, the country requested that Iran take the necessary measures to ensure that such an attack does not occur in the future. At the same time, the country reserved the right to take the necessary countermeasures. Following the drone attack, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, ordered the country’s armed forces to take up full combat readiness. Moreover, the President temporarily suspended border crossings with Iran. In response to the attack, the President of Azerbaijan called the drone attack a “terrorist act.” Moreover, he warned Iran that any attack on Azerbaijan would face the “Iron Fist,” which refers to the country’s military strength.

Despite the strong rhetoric, the situation also revealed the complex nature of the relations between the two countries. The Iranian officials denied the strike in the Nakhchivan region, accusing Israel of the incident. This also reveals the difficulty in determining the responsible party in such situations in the context of security crises in the world. At the same time, Aliyev announced that the country did not and will not take part in the military actions against Iran. In addition, he announced that the Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran contacted the Azerbaijani authorities earlier that day to request assistance in the evacuation of the Iranian embassy staff in Lebanon. The Azerbaijani authorities agreed to help immediately and even did not request to be paid for the assistance. This is an interesting aspect of the relations between the two countries, as the drone strike is presented as a betrayal that could negatively influence the reputation of the Iranian authorities. From the perspective of the international relations discipline, the situation reveals the complex nature of the relations in the South Caucasus region. Sovereignty, territorial integrity, deterrence, etc., are the issues that are in the focus of the relations between the two countries. The strong military rhetoric of the Azerbaijani authorities can also be explained in the context of the realist school of thought in the discipline of international relations. According to this school, the power of the state is the most important factor in the relations between the countries. At the same time, the geopolitical nature of the relations in the South Caucasus is also an interesting aspect of the relations. The fact that Azerbaijan has strategic relations with Turkey and Israel, while the relations with Iran are not always positive, is an interesting aspect of the relations. In addition, the fact that the population of Azerbaijani origin is quite large in Iran is another interesting aspect of the relations. The strong condemnation of the drone strike by Turkey, with the announcement that it will continue to stand by Azerbaijan, is another interesting aspect of the relations in the South Caucasus.

In conclusion, the drone attack in Nakhchivan is more than just a military operation; it is a manifestation of the various security issues in the region. The crisis between the two nations is a clear manifestation of the volatility of diplomatic relations, especially when issues of sovereignty, security, and power balance in the region are at stake. The way the conflict is resolved through diplomatic means and security measures will define the future of the relations between the two nations.
