At least four killed in Russian strikes overnight on Ukraine

Officials said that Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine killed at least four people and injured 20 others, prompting new calls from the Ukrainian president for Western air defense systems. Two people were killed and13 wounded in a ballistic missile strike that hit the capital, Kyiv, early Saturday morning. 

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on Telegram that a fire broke out in a non-residential building in one district, while debris from downed missiles fell in open areas in another, damaging nearby windows. Kyiv MayorVitali Klitschko said on Telegram that two high-rise residential buildings were hit and that six children were among the injured. 

Meanwhile, Russia’s air defense systems destroyed two drones heading toward Moscow on Sunday, according to the city’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin. Russia’s latest bombardment came amid an escalation of attacks on civiliantargets and energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Ukrainian officials said that around 1,200 drones had been launched just last week. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched nine missiles and 62 drones, of whichfour missiles and 50 drones were intercepted. 

The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down 121 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory overnight. Several buildings in Kyiv were damaged, and officials reported that seven people — including two children— were hospitalized. 

In another recent Russian air strike on Kyiv, three people were killed and at least 32 injured. Kyiv officials said a drone strike on a nine-story apartment building in the city’s Desnianskyi district killed three and injured 24 others. 

Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, and it currently controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014. While fighting continues on the front lines with limitedmovement, Ukraine has sought to weaken Russia’s war capabilities by targeting military production sites and oil facilities crucial to its economy. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged his allies to provide long-range weapons for his armed forces but left both the recent White House meeting and the subsequent EU summit empty-handed. 

U.S. President Donald Trump this week announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s largest oil companies — the first of his current term — and the EU followed suit. Trump said that plans for a meeting in Budapest had beenshelved due to the war in Ukraine, adding that talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would “lead nowhere.” 

During his trip to Asia, Trump said he had a “great relationship” with Putin but was “disappointed” by recent events, implying that any potential meeting would depend on the prospect of a peace deal. He has also appearedincreasingly frustrated by Russia’s conditions for ending the war. The August summit in Alaska produced no tangible results. 

Trump had previously stated that new sanctions against Moscow depended on European allies reducing their imports of Russian energy — a goal the EU has pledged to meet by 2028. 

On Saturday, President Zelenskyy said that Russia’s attacks had increased Ukraine’s need for Patriot defense systems. “We attach special importance to Patriot systems because of such attacks. It is crucial that partners with thenecessary capabilities implement what we discussed in recent days,” he wrote in English on X. 

“The United States, Europe, and the G7 countries can help ensure that such attacks no longer threaten people’s safety,” he added. 

As smoke rose over Kyiv following the strikes, Ukrainians — long accustomed to air raids — continued shopping at a nearby farmers’ market. 

“We didn’t know the attack happened here, but even when we realized, we still came. Despite the Russian attacks, people still need to eat,” said 54-year-old Halyna Stetsiura, who set up her fruit and vegetable stall early thatmorning. 

Beekeeper Serhii Lihus, 53, said he heard explosions around 6:30 a.m. as he headed to the market. “It was still dark, everything was burning,” he said — but he continued on to sell his honey. 

Among the customers was 40-year-old Svitlana Shyshlovska, who said, “Even with the threat of attacks, you still need to buy food — and markets like this don’t happen every day.” 

Zelenskyy hopes the United States will agree to supply Ukraine with 25 Patriot systems to strengthen air defenses, particularly in urban areas.
