According to a Euronews report published on 10 March 2026;
The European Parliament is preparing to vote on a trade agreement between the European Union and the United States after intense negotiations among political groups. While negotiators have reached broad consensus on the text, Members of the European Parliament remain cautious and continue to request further clarity from the US side regarding how the agreement will be implemented in practice.
The proposed agreement includes several safeguard mechanisms designed to protect EU interests. Among these is a “sunset clause,” which would automatically end tariff reductions by March 2028 unless they are explicitly renewed. In addition, provisions allow the agreement to be suspended if the United States fails to comply with its commitments. A complementary “sunrise clause” ensures that the agreement will not enter into force until all required conditions are fully met, reinforcing a careful and conditional approach.
Despite the progress, technical details are still being finalized and some elements of the agreement remain under negotiation. The European Parliament is therefore moving forward with the voting process while maintaining a cautious stance, balancing the desire to advance transatlantic trade relations with the need for clear guarantees and accountability. This reflects a broader effort to ensure that the agreement is both effective and reliable before it is fully implemented.
