According to Al Jazeera News: A study that is published in Nature Climate Change recently, includes that two-thirds of global warming caused by world’s richest %10 since 1990.
Wasteful life styles and investments of rich people increase rates of aridity and heatwaves. lead author Sarah Schoengart, a scientist at the public university of ETH Zurich, underlined the wealthiest individuals have effects on carbon footprints.
According to study, the wealthies %1 affected, 26 times more to once-a-century heatwaves and 17 times more to droughts in the Amazon. Additionally, Emissions from the richest 10% in the US and China increased extreme heat events in tropical countries by two to three times. Study says that not only consumer habits, also investments have important effect on this.
To ensure climate justice, the authors recommend implementing increased taxation policies on the wealth and carbon-intensive investments of high-income individuals. Such measures could support adaptation and loss-damage financing in vulnerable countries.
