On November 27, 2024, Israel signed a ceasefire agreement brokered by five countries, including Lebanon and the United States, but has repeatedly violated this ceasefire. The most recent example of this occurred in the airstrikes carried out in southern Beirut in recent days. A senior member of the Hezbollah organization was killed in the airstrike.
Israel said the person killed was Haitham Ali El Tabtabai, a senior Hezbollah leader who had held various high-level positions within the organization in the past.
Israel's goal was to prevent Hezbollah from regaining strength in southern Lebanon and was increasing air strikes in the region for this reason.
It announced that it had targeted the leader responsible for the organization's rearmament. It aims to pressure the Lebanese state and army to disarm the organization more quickly. This was among the terms of last year's ceasefire agreement.
Despite the increased attacks, Israeli defense forces maintained that they were committed to the ceasefire.
